‘Education’ plays a significant and remedial role in improving and balancing the country’s socio-economic framework. The education system in India dates back to ancient times where children were taught in Gurukuls. The Guru used to teach as per the interest of the child, subjects varying from Sanskrit to the holy scriptures and from Mathematics to Metaphysics. At that time, the Guru-Shishya system was the only means of education in India The Indian education system was enhanced with the emergence of universities such as Nalanda, Takshashila, Manassa, Ujjain, and Vikramshila. The modern school education system was brought to India originally by Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay in the 1830s. The Uttar Pradesh Board of High School and Intermediate Education was the first Board established in India in 1921. Then, the Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Rajputana, was set up in 1929. The Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has released the New Education Policy or NEP for School Education with policies for schools and Higher Education for colleges, universities and other higher institutes. The Ministry of Human Resource Development will be renamed as Ministry of Education. Main features of the New Education Policy 2020 School education New pedagogical and curricular structure of school education (5+3+3+4): 3 years in Anganwadi/pre school and 12 years in school. For children of 3 to 6 years: Access to free, safe, high quality ECCE at Anganwadis /Pre school/ Balvatika. Foundational Learning Curriculum for age group of 3-8 divided in two parts: • From age 3-6 in ECCE • Prior to the age of 5 every child will move to a “Preparatory Class” or “Balvatika” (that is, before Class 1) Age 6 to 8, Grade 1-2: Foundational Stage Age 8-11, Grades 3-5: Preparatory Stage, play, discovery, and activity based and interactive classroom learning. Age 11-14, Grade 6-8: Middle Stage, experiential learning in the sciences, mathematics, arts, social sciences, and humanities. NEP 2020: New Academic Structure

Under the New Academic Structure, NEP has proposed to change the curricular and pedagogical structure of school education to make it more responsive and relevant to the developmental needs and interests of children at different stages of their development. Watch the video to understand the new 5+3+3+4 structure that will replace the traditional 10+2 structure. The preparatory stage, which covers grades 3 to 5, will transition gradually from play-based learning to more formal but interactive classroom learning. It will lay a solid groundwork across subjects, including reading, writing, speaking, physical education, art, languages, science, and mathematics. The High School (or Secondary) Stage, which covers grades 9 to 12, will comprise four years of multidisciplinary study, building on the subject-oriented style but with greater depth, greater critical thinking, greater attention to life aspirations, and greater flexibility and student choice. New Education Policy 2020: Advantages and disadvantages of NEP

• NEP 2020 will bring two crore out of school children back into the main stream. • The 10+2 structure of school curricula is to be replaced by a 5+3+3+4 curricular structure corresponding to ages 3-8, 8-11, 11-14, and 14-18 years respectively. It will include 12 years of schooling and three years of Anganwadi and pre-schooling. • NCERT will develop a National Curricular and Pedagogical Framework for Early Childhood Care and Education (NCPFECCE) for children up to the age of eight. • NEP 2020 calls for setting up of a National Mission on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy by the Education Ministry. States will prepare an implementation plan for attaining universal foundational literacy and numeracy in all primary schools for all learners by grade 3 by 2025. • A National Book Promotion Policy is to be formulated. • All students will take school examinations in Grades 3, 5, and 8 which will be conducted by the appropriate authority.
