This review was originally published in conjunction with Strange World ’s theatrical release. It has been updated and republished for the movie’s streaming release. While other movies — the Zootopia and Wreck-It Ralph were beloved, sure, but there’s also the Strange World is Disney’s latest big gamble: a weird movie inspired by pulp magazines and retro science fiction. Directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, who previously worked together on Raya and the Last Dragon, this new Disney movie is an absolutely gorgeous genre fest that gets bogged down by clichéd family drama. There are two stories battling it out here: a phenomenally cool sci-fi epic, and a family story that mostly boils down to “this dream isn’t mine, Dad — it’s yours.” [ Ed. note: This review contains some slight setup spoilers for Strange World.] Image: Disney Strange World takes place in the fantasy land of Avalonia, which is surrounded on all sides by impenetrably high mountains. Twenty-five years ago, fearless explorer Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid) led an expedition team to try and conquer those mountains, but the expedition was halted when his son Searcher (Jake Gyllenh...

Strange World Review: Disney Animation Goes Retro in Unfunny Adventure – IndieWire

By now, we’re all aware of how obsessed with nostalgia our current pop culture era finds itself. From “Stranger Things” to “The Crown” to reboots of everything from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” to “Sex and the City,” everything old is new again. Walt The town of Avalonia lies at the center of a valley bordered on all sides by an impassable mountain range. Famous explorer Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid) goes missing while searching for a way through the mountains. His son Searcher ( Years later, Searcher learns that Pando is dying everywhere, and the Avalonians’ way of life is at risk. He joins an expedition underneath the surface of their world led by president and pilot Callisto Mal ( “Strange World” has the makings of a fun, pulpy adventure story, and it is, but much of the plot is bogged down in strange, unfunny dialogue and a needlessly complicated storyline. Each setback or separation between the main characters is easily resolved and seems created only to pad the movie’s runtime. Every moment of emotional connection or open-mouthed awe is undercut by a joke, as if the filmmakers (director Ethan is the studio’s bajillionth “first ever gay character” (and his family is one of a few interracial families in all of Disney), but as progressive as it is, even that feels timid: His crush appears in one scene at the beginning of the movie, and apart from a short conversation is not mentioned again — easily cut to appease the international censors that provide Disney with so much...

I realized a bunch of negative reviews of this movie on Metacritic. Let me put this in one way, Strange World is a DECENT movie. Sure, it may be a recycled story that might prove to disappoint die-hard disney fans, but I'm sure the movie's main target is to entertain its audience. Strange World’s directors explain the Disney movie’s big twist ending

In Strange World, farmer Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his family stumble into a breathtaking land deep beneath their hometown of Avalonia. But the storyline isn’t just about discovering new places and conquering distant lands. While the movie visually draws from pulp science fiction comics and films, as well as French and Belgian adventure comics, director Don Hall cites the work of Studio Ghibli writer-director Hayao Miyazaki as one of the central influences for the movie’s theme. Miyazaki movies like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are particularly known for addressing the often destructive relationship people have with nature, but Hall was looking back to the beginning of Miyazaki’s career, too. “A lot of his earlier films had very strong environmental messages,” explains Hall. Searcher and his family go on their adventure because they need to save their world’s energy source, a mysterious power-producing plant called pando. Searcher discovered pando 25 years ago, while on an expedition with his father, Jaeger (Dennis Quaid). Pando lets Avalonia’s citizens have their own technological innovations, from coffeemakers to personal flying airships. But recently, the pando’s power started to fizzle out. The movie’s big plot twist, though, isn’t just about the true nature of this plant — it’s something that adds an extra allegorical layer to Strange World. Below, the directors explain the movie’s ultimate reveal, and what shaped it as part of the story. [ Ed. note:...
