These Indians are among BBC’s ‘100 Women’ influencers of 2022

The annual list celebrates the achievements of women internationally, from grassroots volunteers to global leaders, and is used by the broadcaster to focus on women’s experiences around the world through a dedicated series ofinterviews, documentaries and features. For the first time this year, the BBC asked some of the previous ‘100 Developing an interest in space at an early age, Bandla went on to study aeronautical engineering in the US. She is now Vice President of Government Affairs and Research Operations for Virgin Galactic (VG), a role that includes working with research customers to fly science and technology experiments on board VG’s SpaceShip. She also works on theatrical scripts in collaboration with the theatre group Vivadi, of which she is a founding member. According to the list, when her parents couldn’t fulfil a demand for more dowry in December 2000, Jawale’s husband set her on fire with kerosene. The family didn’t file a police complaint but after her husband left with their son, Sneha became determined to rebuild her life, as a tarot card reader and scriptwriter – jobs where people didn’t have to see her face. Burn injury and domestic violence survivor, Sneha Jawale is BBC’s new guest presenter

On December 12 last year, the media house had covered Jawale’s struggles as a domestic violence and burn survivor in a Jawale’s husband had set her on fire with kerosene in December 2000, after her parents couldn’t fulfill his demand for more dowry. Though she survived, she said she was abandoned by her family and separated from her four-year-old son. Struggling to find a job because of the burn scars on her face and body, Javale eventually took up tarot card reading. Her life took a turn when she became a part of a widely acclaimed play, Nirbhaya, in 2013. Directed by Yael Farber, it narrated the ghastly 2012 Delhi gangrape, along with other stories of abuse suffered by women. At least five of the seven cast members, including Jawale, enacted scenes from their own lives. After 300 stagings of Nirbhaya across the world, Jawale will now bring much-needed diversity and inclusion to the media landscape.

With the help of a special series of interviews, documentaries, and features, the BBC uses the yearly list to highlight the accomplishments of women throughout the world, from grassroots activists to global leaders. The BBC invited some of the previous "100 Women" for the first time this year to suggest women they thought should be included on the list for 2022. The BBC's list of the 100 most powerful women also features the four Indians, as well as the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the prime minister of Barbados, Mia Mottle, the first lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, the musician Billie Eilish, the actress and disability rights activist Selma Blair, and the Iranian climber Elnaz Rekab, who recently made headlines in Iran for competing in South Korea without a heads.
