Tamil Nadu MLAs' salary hiked to Rs 1.05 lakh

CHENNAI: The salaries of The chief minister also announced that Allowances for the Chief Minister, Ministers, the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition and the Government Chief Whip were also increased with (retrospective) effect from July 1 this year. Pension for former MLAs and members of the now defunct legislative council will be increased to Rs 20,000 from the present Rs 12,000. The chief minister also hiked the monthly pension for journalists to Rs 10,000 from the current Rs 8,000 and allowance for the Assembly Watch and Ward staff as well. Giving the break up of MLA's pay hike, he said their salary would be increased from Rs 8,000 to Rs 30,000. Similarly, compensatory allowance will be Rs 10,000 from Rs 7,000 while telephone allowance has been revised to Rs 7,500 from Rs 5,000. The constituency allowance goes up to Rs 25,000 from Rs 10,000 and consolidated allowance to Rs 5,000 from Rs 2,500. Vehicle allowance will be upwardly revised to Rs 25,000 from 20,000. Postal allowance will continue to be same at Rs 2,500. As regards the Chief Minister, Ministers and Speaker, their Compensatory allowance will now be Rs 15,000 and expenditure allowance Rs 10,000 and constituency allowance Rs 25,000. For instance, in the south, the average assets held by MLAs crossed Rs. 25 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. In the west, the average assets crossed Rs. 20 crores in Goa and Maharashtra. But in the east, the average assets did not cross Rs. 5 crore in Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand or Bihar. Kerala, along with the north-eastern States of Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and Assam, also hosts relatively poor MLAs. Chart 1 The chart shows the State-wise average assets of an MLA in ₹ crore. The Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed two Bills increasing the salaries and allowances of the chief minister, ministers, and legislators. Two bills, the Karnataka Ministers Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2022 and The Karnataka Legislature Salaries, Pensions and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2022, were passed without any discussion. The bill on ministers’ salaries and allowances proposes to increase the salary of the chief minister from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000 per month, the salary of ministers from ₹40,000 to ₹60,000, and sumptuary allowance for both will be increased from ₹3 lakh to ₹4.50 lakh per annum. In spite of a reduction in revenue owing to the Covid-19 pandemic disrupting economic activities and cut in allocation to many schemes, the Karnataka legislature passed two bills to execute a steep increase in the salary of MLAs, MLCs, Ministers, Speaker, Deputy Speaker and the Leader of Opposition. Monthly salaries of the Speaker of the Assembly and the Chairman of the Council would go up from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000 while their annual sumptuary allowance would be increased from ₹3 lakh to ₹4lakh. Sumptuary allowance is given for the expenditure incurred on entertaining visitors. The house rent allowance for the Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Leader of Opposition, Government chief whip and Opposition chief whip would be doubled from ₹80,000 to ₹1.60 lakh per month. Conveyance allowance (equal to the cost of petrol) for the Chairman and Speaker would be doubled from 1,000 litres to 2,000 litres of petrol per month.
