Authorities on Wednesday terminated three MGNREGA employees working in Rural Development Department (RDD) on corruption charges and misappropriation of funds in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Imam Din told Greater Kashmirthat the employees were working as Technical Assistants in Sogam block of RDD department.

An amount of Rs 5.09 cror have been expended by the Rural Development Department on the execution of 433 rural works under MGNREGA upto August 2010, besides 62000 job cards were also issued during the same period. 1336, development works were also targeted to complete them during the current fiscal. This was stated in a meeting of officers and engineers of Rural Development Department to review the progress achieved under the various sectors in the district under the chairmanship of District Development Commissioner, Kupwara, Mr Mohammad Shafi Rather. The Chief Planning Officer, Kupwara, ACD and BDOs were also present in the review meeting. It was given out that under BADP Rs 9.92 crore are being spent while under Indira Awas Yojna Rs 5.77 crore are being proposed in which Rs 15 lakh have been expended for the execution and upgradation of all low cost houses in the district. The District Development Commissioner, Kupwara exhorted upon the officers to work with more zeal and redouble their efforts to complete the ongoing works taken in hand so that the poor people will got benefited at a their doorsteps. He also instructed the officers to remain present at their headquarters. The project officer, DRDA informed the meeting that 3 projects are under execution

The DDC said that there is ample opportunity to strike a convergence between MGNREGA and other major programmes being implemented by different line departments without diluting their goals and objectives to redouble the benefits and quantity and quality of works and give minimum benefits to labour force of the district. The DDC while stressing on the need of convergence said for creation of durable assets maximum possible works shall be executed in convergence with NREGA in the financial year 2023-24 where excavation related works, labour oriented and plantation based works shall be executed under convergence. The DDC directed to execute all IWMP works across Kupwara district under convergence with NREGA. "In convergence with MGNREGA, IWMP can make good durable and constructive assets- No IWMP work shall be executed in district without convergence of MGNREGA" DDC said. While reviewing the Forest department schemes, the DDC said that Forest department will carry 100 percent plantation works in convergence with NREGA. "No department will do the earth excavation or earth work on its own except in convergence with MGNREGA and no department will spend money on earth works", DDC said.
