New Delhi: The Congress has returned to power in Himachal Pradesh, proving once again the state's decades-old 'tradition' of voting out a government after a single term. The BJP did try very hard to break this cyclical pattern. Party chief JP Nadda held some 50 rallies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held five rallies, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held 20 rallies and union minister Anurag Thakur even shed tears. Incumbent Chief Minister Jairam Thakur has accepted defeat and said they will "continue to play a positive role". The Congress on Thursday gained 40 seats in the 68-member Assembly in the hill state which maintained its history of not electing any incumbent administration to power since 1985. Mukesh Agnihotri, the opposition's leader, said that a meeting will take place in Shimla on Friday. The Congress's current dilemma is choosing a chief ministerial figure who can unite the party moving ahead. State party president Pratibha Singh is considered a key frontrunner for the chief minister's post, closely followed by former party chief Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and outgoing CLP leader Mukesh Agnihotri. While the Congress' final tally was 40, five more than the majority mark in the 68-member state assembly, the overall vote share difference with the BJP was less than 1 per cent. Himachal Pradesh Assembly Election Result 2022 Suresh Kumar, the Congress candidate in Bhoranj, won by only 60 votes. Kumar received 43.1 per cent of the total votes cast, with 24,779 votes cast, while BJP's Anil Dhiman received 43.05 per cent (24,719 votes). Pawan Kumar, an independent candidate, received 6,861 votes, while Rajni Kaushal, of the Aam Aadmi Party, received 463 votes. Nowadays, a party spends money like a corporate company. In recent assembly elections held in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, the expenditure figure went to three-digit in crores. The Congress alone spent over Rs 130 crore for contesting the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly polls held late last year. An expenditure report submitted by the party to the Election Commission stated that the Congress spent Rs 27.02 crore in Himachal Pradesh and Rs 103.62 crore in Gujarat. In Himachal Pradesh, the party spent Rs 14.80 crore for funding its candidates, Rs 2.74 crore on advertisements and publicity, and Rs 5.28 crore on travel of its star campaigners, which includes expenditure on hiring special aircraft for its top leaders. In Gujarat, the Congress spent Rs 45.34 crore for funding its candidates; Rs 18.08 crore on publicity, including posters and banners; Rs 11.27 crore on advertisements and Rs 9.88 crore on travel of its star campaigners.
