LIVE: ‘Victory of people of Delhi’, Kejriwal as AAP wins mayor, dy mayor polls

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is undergoing the voting process in its fourth attempt to elect its mayor on Wednesday, after the Supreme Court ruled out on Friday the possibility of aldermen (nominated members) participating in the voting process - a matter which had ensued a fresh tussle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the MCD election result. Delhi Mayoral election LIVE: Councillors at MCD headquarters during fourth mayoral poll bid.(HT Photo) The civic body had previously made attempts - on January 6, January 24 and February 6 to hold the elections. AAP won the December poll battle by securing 134 of 250 wards, bringing an end to BJP’s 15 years of rule over the civic body and was expected to appoint its mayor but could not do so after a row erupted over the order of oath ceremony and allowing the members appointed by LG VK Saxena to vote which led to clashes. AAP had alleged that allowing the 10 aldermen to vote would favour BJP and opposed the decision to simultaneously hold elections for the post of mayor, deputy mayor and members of the standing committee stating it was against the rules. Following the top court’s decision, the mayoral poll is expected to happen today in which AAP has fielded Shelly Oberoi while BJP’s contender is Rekha Gupta. For the duty position, AAP’s Aaley Mohammed Iqbal will contest against BJP’s Kamal Bagri. At the last meeting of the MCD House on February 6, three controversial ruling...

Delhi Municipal Corporation Election likely to be held in 1st week of December

Notably, the total number of wards for the upcoming civic body polls in the national capital has now been brought down to 250 from the original 272. The civic body was trifurcated as North, South and East Delhi Municipal Corporations earlier in 2011. However, assuming again the identity of MCD, they were amalgamated into a unified body in May 2022. The previous three corporations in Delhi comprised 104 wards each in North and South corporations and the East corporation had 64 wards under their jurisdictions. BJP Vs AAP tussle The civic polls were initially scheduled for March, but they were pushed back by the Centre claiming that they want to merge the three civic bodies in Delhi, which were trifurcated in 2011 under the Congress-led government. Following the BJP-ruled Centre’s action, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government in the capital contended that the BJP was playing for time as it was nervous about the contest. AAP even claimed that BJP blocked the elections as it feared failure after its crushing defeat in Punjab Assembly polls. Following the Centre’s demand for redrawing the wards, AAP also opposed the draft plan when it was submitted by the Delimitation Commission last month. Calling the move "politically motivated...
