Sri Lanka to extend capital controls by further six months

• Govt. says will reconsider upon the completion of debt restructuring negotiations targeted in September The government has decided to extend capital controls by further six months limiting the movement of foreign currency out of the country in order to continue to re-build the country’s foreign exchange reserves. President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies sought the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday to take the required measures to extend the validity period of the order issued under Section No. 22 of the Foreign Exchange Act No. 12 of 2017 for another 6 months from 30th of this month. Although, the country’s foreign exchange reserves have risen to over US$ 3. 5 billion from near zero levels driven by remittances and tourism inflows, Cabinet Spokesperson Bandula Gunawardena pointed out that they have not still grown to respectable levels to lift the capital controls. “During the pre-crisis period when the economy was booming, we managed to maintain around US$ 8.2 billion in official foreign reserves,” he noted. Hence, he said that Central Bank has recommended extending the capital controls by further six months which was set to expire on June 30, 2023. Upon the completion of debt restructuring negotiations targeted in September, the government is expected to reconsider the decision on capital controls, according to Gunawardena. Under the Foreign Exchange Act No. 12 of 2017, the gove...

Anuradhapura

The Sacred City of Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka. Already in 380 BC it became the Singhalese capital. One of the most famous (and eldest) monuments at the site is the sacred bo tree near the centre. It was grown from a cutting from the tree in India where Buddha achieved enlightenment, and brought here in the 3rd century BC by Sanghamitta, the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns. The old capital flourished for 1,300 years, until it was abandoned after an invasion in 993. Nearby Polonnaruva, said to be a safer place, became the new capital. The impressive remains of the site were discovered in the early 19th century, hidden away in thick jungle for a long time. The palaces, monasteries and monuments are since then in restoration. 5.00 The Philippines - 27-May-18 - As a cultural worker, hunting for World Heritage Sites has gone beyond just seeing sites. Rather, it has become more of experiencing them. Hence, in the Anuradhapura vs Polonnaruwa debate, clearly, I would have to give it to the former. The first capital of Sri Lanka remains very much alive today, attracting more devoted pilgrims than actual tourists. While most of the key monuments here are dagobas (local term for stupa), and the variety of architecture is not as diverse as that of Polonnaruwa's, there is a great amount of history in each of them that have been made more special by the reverence that the people continuously attach to them up to these days.In fact, the age of the original monume...

What is the Capital of Sri Lanka?

(Last Updated On: June 5, 2018) What is the capital of Sri Lanka? It might seem like a simple question, but the answer isn’t quite as clear as it is in most other places. This is due to the fact that Sri Lanka actually has two capitals , as opposed to just one. What is the Capital of Sri Lanka? Both Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte and Colombo are considered capitals of Sri Lanka . Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is the country’s administrative capital, and contains the seat of the national legislature. Colombo, on the other hand, is the largest city in Sri Lanka, and serves as the commercial capital. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte was founded in the 14th century, serving as capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom of Kotte for some 200 years before being occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The Portuguese would struggle to withstand repeated attacks by forces from the nearby Kingdom of Sitawaka, however, and would ultimately abandon the city, eventually settling in Colombo and making it their new capital. Eventually, the British would come to rule Sri Lanka, which they called Ceylon. Following Sri Lankan independence, which came in 1948, it became clear that government offices had outgrown the country’s capital of Colombo, and a decision was made to relocate the government outside of the city. In 1977, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte was named capital, and in 1982, a new parliament building was inaugurated. Soon after, other government offices would move to the city....
