Was Vajpayee Really the 'Right Man in Wrong Party'

Recently a book "VAJPAYEE: The Ascent of the Hindu Right, 1924–1977" has been published on the life of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The second issue of this book will come in December. It is said about him that he was a 'soft character'? Was he really the 'right man in the wrong party'? In this episode of 'Itihas ke Panne', senior journalist Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay is in conversation with Abhishek Choudhary, author of the same book.

An unfamiliar portrait of Vajpayee

We all think we knew Atal Bihari Vajpayee, but did we? No doubt several people admired him, many thought he was a fine prime minister, and practically everyone was enchanted by his oratory. But did we know the man behind the image? PREMIUM Vajpayee: The Ascent of the Hindu Right by Abhishek Choudhary sheds light on the former PM's life(HT PHOTO) A recently published biography reveals aspects of the man we neither knew of nor could have guessed, whilst simultaneously disproving stories we assumed were accurate. It also discusses his unorthodox private life, which even the informed have always refrained from mentioning. I’m referring to Abhishek Choudhary’s Vajpayee: The Ascent of the Hindu Right 1924-1977. It’s the first of a two-volume effort. The second will be published in December. We’re told, for example, the private Vajpayee was a bon viveur. He had a “fondness for bhang”, “drank in moderate quantities” and had “a lifelong gluttony” for Chinese food. When in New York, he would happily visit nightclubs. “On such informal outings, he drank a peg or two.” The young Atal, as the author calls him, appeared distinctly anti-Muslim. Choudhary writes he “argued that the Muslims who had opted to live in India were to be seen as traitors”. In an article Vajpayee wrote for Rashtradharma, he called them “fifth columnists”. No doubt, the adult politician’s views were very different. Choudhary’s book reveals how great was the change. Of young Vajpayee’s attitude to Mahatma Gandhi, C...

Vajpayee, the man who found India its place among nations

A veteran of the non-Congress opposition with his roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Vajpayee’s formal career in politics began with his election to the Lok Sabha in 1957 as a young legislator and peaked in 1996 when he powered the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the first of three non-consecutive wins in general elections. The third time around, he led a stable government that lasted the full term—a first for a non-Congress administration. Reputed for his Also read: Vajpayee’s tenure was marked for its tenacity—his name Atal means determined or immovable—with the prime minister refusing to budge in the face of fierce Western pressure after India conducted five nuclear tests, less than two months after his second term, in May 1998. In domestic politics Vajpayee led the way for his party to garner regional political support in the form of the National Democratic Alliance or NDA, a remarkable exercise in coalition politics that continues to serve the BJP well to this day. Vajpayee, who breathed his last after coping with ill-health for nearly a decade, lived his life with an indomitable spirit, his friends recall. “We had not performed well in Delhi elections when Vajpayee and L.K. Advani, who were sitting at the office, decided to watch a movie to relax. Without looking at the name of the movie that was playing in the theatre at Paharganj, the two leaders went inside. The movie which was playing was Phir Subah Hogi (A New Dawn Will Come). Vajpayee turned to Adv...

Book Review

Atal Bihari Vajpayee has remained a puzzle in his politics and in his personal life. And it led to the popular myth about his being a liberal in a right-wing party. And on the other hand he was not much of a conservative in the intellectual sense. He stopped short of being a liberal or a conservative. The only certainty was that he was not ever a progressive in the leftist sense of the term. That makes him an undecided person rather than an enigma. Abhishek Chaudhary in setting out to get the facts of Vajpayee’s life and political career has brought to light the little details that should help us form the big picture of the man. He in inclined towards learning and he makes his way through school and college up till his post-graduation in Hindi. We really do not know what books he read in Hindi, what authors and poets left an impression on him except for the fact that he shows a flair for debate and a command over Hindi. He writes poems but it does not seem that they withstand literary scrutiny but the poems made him popular among the people who followed RSS. It is his command of Hindi that remains his strong point after he joins the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a full-time pracharak, and it is this that makes him the personal secretary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, and later makes him a promising member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS). He was not a founding member of the Jana Sangh. He was still in the wings as an editor of the RSS publications. His apprenticeship i...
