Chillers, AHU, RTU How they work

In this article we will be looking at how chillers, AHU’s and RTU’s work together, the difference between them and the basic working principles behind each of them. Chillers, Air Handling Units and Rooftop units are used extensively within HVAC systems for commercial properties. You can watch the video on this article by scrolling to the bottom! If you’re looking for high quality refrigeration components and solutions, then I recommend checking out what Chillers Water cooled Chiller Water cooled chillers are typically located in the basement or lowest floor of a building. This type of chiller needs a cooling tower to reject the heat from the building. The chiller produces chilled water and pushes this around the building to Air Handling Units (AHU’s) and Fan Coil Units (FCU’s) etc. These units circulate air around the local space as well as the building. The air is forced across heat exchangers, containing the chilled water, which extracts the unwanted heat before the air is distributed throughout the building. Water cooled chiller animation The unwanted heat, that is extracted from the air, collects in the chilled water loop. This loop circulates back to the chiller and once it reaches the evaporator, the unwanted heat will be transferred over to the chillers condenser via a refrigerant loop. The condenser absorbs this heat and then dumps it into the “condenser water” loop which runs between the chillers condenser and the cooling tower. Cooling Towers on large commercial ...

AHU types, components, and configurations

As HVAC designers, providing a system that can meet the building comfort requirements at a reasonable cost while minimizing maintenance costs and energy use, is the primary goal. Indoor air quality (IAQ), energy use, and occupant thermal comfort are a few of the concerns faced by building operations and maintenance (O&M) staff. There are numerous articles and reviews regarding HVAC design. Many of these articles and other technical information can be found through The For example, In addition, AHU appurtenances are equipment or components that may be added to an AHU for purposes, including but not limited to, control, isolation, safety, static pressure regain, and wear. Common appurtenances include, but are not limited to, coils, filters, energy recovery devices, dampers, air-mixers, spray assemblies, eliminators, discharge plenums, and inlet plenums. Figure 3 is an example of a preliminary AHU elevation selection that illustrates the various physical internal components for a dual duct AHU with multiple plenum fans. By definition, AHUs are used to condition and/or circulate air as part of an HVAC system. The control and operation of AHUs is beyond the scope of this article, but these items become increasingly more complicated with the HVAC application and the number of components within the AHU. AHUs can be small, used in local environmental spaces, and include minimal components such as: a fan or blower, a single heat transfer coil, and filter(s). These small, terminal-t...

Air Handling Unit (AHU) performance calculation

Air Handling Unit (AHU) performance calculation by Dasa . 08 Dec 2020 Click here for BTU of the coil side(High side) should match the BTU of the air side(Low side). Water side / High side: Typical values are • Chilled water-in 44° F • Chilled water-out 54° F • Estimated Δt - 10° F • Chilled water pressure drops - max. 20 ft of H2O • Flow rate - 2.4 gpm/ton • Water velocity – 2 fps ~ 3 fps A typical chilled water system gives water at 44° F to an AHU at the inlet. Measure the water flow rate at the inlet of the AHU. We can measure the flow rate using an analog/digital manometer OR an ultrasonic flowmeter installed on the chilled water pipe. Click here for Typical AHU requires a flow rate of 2.4 gallons/ton. So, the flow rate should be 24 gpm for the AHU capacity of 10 TR. A typical AHU will have a Δt of 10° F, hence we assumed the AHU coil outlet temperature as 54° F. Refer For the above assumed parameters we can calculate the cooling load as Btu/hr = 500 x gpm x Δt = 500 X 24 gpm x (44° F - 54° F) = 120000 = 120000 / 12000 tons = 10 tons Air side / Low side: For simplicity consider there is no fresh air addition, AHU fan motor heat gain, and infiltration. Also a typical cooling and dehumidification process is considered in this example. Use “sling psychrometer” and take the below readings at the AHU inlet. • DBT = 75° F • WBT = 68° F AHU inlet is same as the “return air from room” / “room air temperature” / “required zone air conditions”. Also, take the below readings at t...

AHU Full Form

AHU Full Form What Is The Full Form Of AHU? AHU stands for “Air Handling Unit.” It is an important component of a building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. AHUs are responsible for circulating and conditioning air throughout a building, providing fresh air and regulating temperature and humidity levels. An AHU typically consists of a housing unit, a fan, and a series of filters, coils, and dampers. The housing unit contains the fan and the other components, and is designed to minimize noise and vibration. The fan draws in air from the building and passes it through the filters to remove dust, dirt, and other particles. The air then passes through the coils, which heat or cool it as needed, before being distributed to the building through a network of ducts. AHUs are designed to be customizable, with different configurations and components depending on the needs of the building. They can be used in a variety of applications, from residential homes to large commercial and industrial buildings. Overall, AHUs play a critical role in maintaining air quality and comfort in buildings. Properly designed and maintained AHUs can help reduce energy consumption and improve indoor air quality, contributing to a healthier and more comfortable environment for occupants.
